What is Lucifer about?

Lucifer Morningstar, the Devil himself, has quit Hell and opened a nightclub in Los Angeles. That premise could have gone very wrong very fast, and for a while in the early seasons it walks a fine line between charming and irritating. What keeps it on the right side of that line is Tom Ellis, who plays the character with a loose, self-aware charisma that makes even the weakest procedural episodes watchable. He is having the time of his life in this role, and that energy is contagious.

The show is a police procedural with a supernatural twist. Lucifer consults on LAPD cases alongside detective Chloe Decker, and most episodes follow the standard format: crime, investigation, revelation, resolution. What distinguishes the approach is that the show uses this structure almost as an excuse to run a long-form therapy narrative. Lucifer is in actual therapy with Dr. Linda Martin, and the series takes his psychological arc seriously across six seasons, tracing his relationship with guilt, identity, and free will in ways that sneak up on you. It is funnier than you expect, more emotionally engaged than the premise suggests, and occasionally surprisingly musical.

FOX cancelled it after three seasons, which generated one of the more spirited fan campaigns in recent streaming history. Netflix picked it up, ran it for three more seasons, and the audience on that platform was enormous, with the show ranking among Netflix's most-watched at several points during its run. Critics were mixed, often noting the formulaic case-of-the-week structure as a drag on the show's better instincts. That criticism is fair. The procedural scaffolding does creak, especially in the middle seasons.

What the show does unusually well is maintain a core ensemble that audiences clearly became attached to over six years. The supporting cast, particularly Lesley-Ann Brandt as the demon Mazikeen and D.B. Woodside as the angel Amenadiel, gets genuine room to develop. By the final season, the show is less interested in crimes and more interested in what happens when the Devil decides he might actually want to be good, which is either the whole point or a long way to travel for a straightforward moral, depending on your patience for it.

Lucifer's ending is genuinely unusual in TV history because the show got a second life before it got a finale. FOX cancelled it after three seasons in 2018, and the fan response was loud enough that Netflix picked it up, ran it for three more seasons, and let it conclude on its own terms. By the time season six aired in 2021, the show had essentially outlived its original death sentence and reached a point where the creators chose to wrap things up rather than keep going indefinitely.

Netflix had originally announced that season five would be the last, and the writers structured it accordingly. Then a sixth season was added, which pushed the ending back slightly but didn't fundamentally change the trajectory. Creator Joe Henderson and showrunner Ildy Modrovich had a story they wanted to finish, and the final season was about closing that story rather than responding to any external pressure. The show wasn't cancelled by Netflix; it stopped because the people making it decided it was done.

With 93 episodes across six seasons and an IMDb score of 8.0, Lucifer built a genuinely devoted audience, particularly after the Netflix move. The ending reflects a creative decision more than a business one, which is still fairly rare for a genre show based on a comic book property. Most of those run until someone pulls the plug. Lucifer got to bow out on its own terms, which is probably the best outcome a cancelled show has ever managed.
