What is The X-Files about?

The X-Files built its reputation on a simple but endlessly productive tension: a true believer and a scientist locked in a basement office, disagreeing about everything, trusting each other completely. Mulder chases aliens, government conspiracies, and creatures that defy explanation. Scully performs autopsies and raises her eyebrow. For nine seasons in its original run, that dynamic was enough to sustain one of the most inventive genre shows American television had produced.

What made the show distinctive was its range. The mythology episodes, which tracked a vast and increasingly tangled government cover-up about extraterrestrial life, gave the series weight and forward momentum. But the standalone "monster of the week" episodes were often where it was most alive, swinging from genuine dread to deadpan comedy to something that felt almost literary. Some of those episodes, "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose" in particular, are as good as television of the 1990s got. Duchovny and Anderson are the reason any of it works. Their chemistry is not romantic exactly, though the show teased that for years. It is something more specific and stranger, two people who have become each other's only reliable witness.

Critical reception was strong, and the show became a genuine cultural phenomenon through the mid-to-late 1990s, generating a feature film in 1998 and a devoted audience that parsed every conspiracy thread with real intensity. The later seasons of the original run were less warmly received, as the mythology became difficult to follow and the show's creative energy visibly flagged, especially after Duchovny reduced his involvement. A 2008 film went largely unnoticed.

The two revival seasons, arriving in 2016 and 2018, are a more complicated story. Anderson was excellent throughout, and there were individual episodes worth watching. But the revival also demonstrated how much the show depended on a particular cultural moment, a pre-internet anxiety about what governments might be hiding, and how hard that mood is to reconstruct. The conspiracy framework that once felt urgent now felt like nostalgia for a specific kind of paranoia.

The X-Files is a strange case of a show that essentially ended twice. The original run on FOX closed out in 2002 after nine seasons, largely because the mythology that had driven the series, the alien conspiracy arc, had become so convoluted that even devoted fans had trouble following it. David Duchovny's reduced presence in seasons eight and nine didn't help. The show had been a genuine cultural phenomenon in the mid-nineties, but by the early 2000s the ratings had softened considerably and the creative engine was running low on fuel.

The 2016 revival, which brought Duchovny and Gillian Anderson back for a six-episode event series, was a ratings success for FOX, enough to justify another short run. Season eleven aired in early 2018 and by most accounts it was intended to be another limited engagement rather than an open-ended ongoing series. Anderson had made clear she was done with the role of Dana Scully after that season, and without her there was really no show to speak of. Mulder without Scully is not The X-Files in any meaningful sense, and creator Chris Carter would have known that.

So the show didn't so much get cancelled as run out of road. The revival format, short bursts of episodes rather than a full season order, always suggested FOX and the producers were treating it as a special event rather than a recommitment to a long run. Anderson's departure made continuing the premise essentially impossible, and that was that.
