What is Fringe about?

Fringe arrived in 2008 as Fox's bid to fill the X-Files-shaped hole in genre television, and for five seasons it did something more interesting than that comparison suggests. What starts as a procedural about an FBI unit investigating bizarre crimes, cases involving reanimated corpses, flesh-melting viruses, and teleportation gone wrong, gradually becomes one of the more ambitious science fiction narratives American network television has attempted. By its midpoint the show is running a parallel universe mythology, asking you to track multiple versions of the same characters across dimensions and decide which ones you trust.

The thing that keeps it working, across all of that escalating strangeness, is John Noble as Walter Bishop. He is a disgraced mad scientist who spent years in a psychiatric institution, and Noble plays him as simultaneously the funniest and most tragic figure in the show. His relationship with his son Peter, played by Joshua Jackson with a kind of weary competence, gives the mythology its emotional spine. Anna Torv as Olivia starts somewhat stiffly but grows considerably as the writers give her more to do, particularly when the parallel universe storyline forces her into genuinely uncomfortable territory.

Critics warmed to it slowly. The first season's monster-of-the-week format drew skepticism from viewers expecting something more serialized, and the ratings were never entirely comfortable. But the show built a loyal audience that stayed through the back half, which is where Fringe earns most of its reputation. The fifth and final season is a different beast entirely, a post-apocalyptic story set in a future ruled by beings called Observers, and opinion on it remains divided. Some fans consider it a satisfying conclusion; others find it a tonal departure that the show never fully reconciles with what came before.

What Fringe does better than most of its peers is remember that absurdity and grief can live in the same scene. Walter eating licorice while discussing interdimensional warfare is not played for camp. It is just how the show works, and at its best, that tonal balance feels hard-won.

Why did Fringe end?

Fringe is a show that probably shouldn't have lasted five seasons on FOX, and the fact that it did says something about how much the network and the producers wanted to see it through. Ratings were always a problem. The show debuted to solid numbers in 2008 but shed viewers steadily as it leaned harder into its serialized mythology. By the time it reached its fourth and fifth seasons, it was pulling in audiences that would have gotten most shows cancelled outright. FOX moved it to Friday nights, which is traditionally where networks send shows to die quietly, and yet it kept going.

The fifth and final season was, by most accounts, a negotiated conclusion rather than a cancellation. The producers knew they were running out of runway, and rather than get cut off mid-story, they worked with FOX to get a shortened final run of thirteen episodes to wrap things up. That kind of arrangement had become more common by the early 2010s, as networks occasionally granted loyal but low-rated shows a chance to close out properly. Fringe took that opportunity and used it to tell a contained, flash-forward story set in 2036 against an Observer-occupied Earth.

So the show ended because its audience had eroded too far to justify a full ongoing renewal, but not so completely that FOX was willing to just pull the plug without a finale. Showrunner J.H. Wyman and his team got to put a bow on it, which is more than a lot of genre shows on network television ever get.
