What is The Simpsons about?

The Simpsons started as a scrappy, slightly ugly animated short on The Tracey Ullman Show, and within a few years of its 1989 debut as a full series it had rewritten what television comedy could do. At its peak, roughly seasons three through eight or nine depending on who you ask, it was the sharpest satirical comedy on American television, dismantling suburban complacency, corporate greed, media stupidity, and political failure with jokes that landed hard enough to feel genuinely subversive. Homer's catastrophic incompetence, Bart's cheerful nihilism, and Lisa's principled frustration gave the writers engines that never seemed to run out of fuel. Marge, underwritten for stretches, still held the show's emotional center in a way that was easy to take for granted.

The tone is what made it distinctive. It was warm without being sentimental, cynical without being cruel, and it trusted its audience to catch references that ranged from Citizen Kane to labor history to Greek mythology. The writing room was, for a television comedy, almost absurdly talented, and that density of craft showed in every act break and throwaway background gag.

The reception is almost impossible to summarize fairly because the show has been running for 37 seasons and 800-plus episodes across vastly different eras. Critics and fans who grew up with the golden age episodes defend them with the intensity of people protecting something formative, and they are not wrong. The show commands an 8.6 on IMDb across nearly half a million votes, which reflects enormous goodwill built over decades. The later seasons attract a reliable wave of criticism about diminishing returns, softened edges, and a Homer who became louder and dumber as the writing got less precise. That criticism is also not wrong.

What is genuinely strange about The Simpsons in 2025 is that it is still here, still on FOX on Sunday nights, still casting celebrity voices and still occasionally producing an episode that reminds you what the show could do. It is not what it was. But what it was changed animation, changed comedy, and changed how American culture talked about itself, and the specific texture of Springfield, the nuclear plant, the doughnut, the couch, the chalkboard, remains so embedded in shared memory that even a mediocre episode arrives trailing 35 years of accumulated meaning.
