George Cooper, the father Big Bang Theory painted as a disappointing absent figure, gets a full rehabilitation here. Lance Barber plays him with real dignity, and it changes how you feel about the whole mythology.

Critics generally appreciated the show's gentler register, and audiences came in large numbers, making it one of CBS's most consistent performers throughout its run. It earned a devoted following even among people who had no particular attachment to the original show. The complaints that did surface usually targeted its more sentimental moments, which can tip into formula, and the narration occasionally explains jokes that would land better left alone.

What keeps Young Sheldon worth watching, even at its most predictable, is Annie Potts as the grandmother Connie, a gambling, whiskey-drinking counterweight to Mary's religiosity. She gives the show a pulse whenever it risks going soft.

The show was a prequel to The Big Bang Theory, and the events of that series set firm boundaries on where Sheldon's childhood story could go. By the time the show reached its seventh season, it had arrived at the moments the parent series had already referenced: Sheldon leaving Texas for college, his father's death, the family dynamics that shaped the adult version of the character viewers already knew. There was nowhere left to go without contradicting established canon.

The numbers also pointed toward a graceful exit rather than an indefinite run. Young Sheldon was still one of CBS's more reliable comedies, but ratings had softened from the strong early seasons when the Big Bang Theory audience was actively following the spinoff out of loyalty to that world. By season six and seven, the show was drawing a smaller crowd, and the novelty of seeing Sheldon as a child had long worn off. It had become a warm family drama as much as a comedy, which won it some affection but also gradually shifted it away from its original appeal.

CBS and the producers appear to have treated the final season as a proper conclusion rather than a sudden ending, which is the right way to read it. The creative team knew where the story had to end, and they ended it there. This was a show that ran longer than many expected, delivered 141 episodes, and closed on its own terms.
