The later addition of Amy Acker's Root gave the series its emotional and philosophical core, a character whose relationship with the Machine becomes something the show treats with surprising sincerity rather than irony.

Critics warmed to it gradually, recognizing that what looked like another CBS procedural was doing something more interesting underneath. Audiences responded strongly, with the show maintaining a devoted following across five seasons, and that loyalty showed when CBS allowed it a shortened final season to conclude the story properly rather than leaving it unresolved. The IMDb score of 8.5 reflects a fanbase that feels the show delivered on its ambitions, which it largely did, though the middle seasons have real pacing problems.

Where it sits in relation to other shows matters less than this specific fact: Person of Interest aired during the early years of widespread debate about government surveillance, NSA data collection, and the ethics of algorithmic decision-making, and it took those questions seriously in ways that prestige cable dramas of the same era mostly avoided.
