What is Marvel's Daredevil about?

Charlie Cox plays Matt Murdock as a man in genuine conflict, not just a hero with a gimmick. The blindness, the Catholicism, the stubborn insistence on using the law while also beating people unconscious in alleyways, all of it creates a character who is actually interesting to spend time with. The show is set in Hell's Kitchen and keeps its scale deliberately small. No world-ending threats, no alien armies. Just a city neighborhood, organized crime, and one very tired lawyer.

What made Daredevil stand out among the wave of Marvel television was its willingness to be grim without being dumb about it. The action choreography, particularly a hallway fight scene in the first season, genuinely raised the bar for what superhero television could look like physically. The show earns its violence rather than just deploying it. Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk is the other reason to watch. He plays the Kingpin as a man of tremendous feeling and tremendous cruelty, and the scenes between him and Cox have a real charge to them.

Critics responded warmly, particularly to the first season, and audiences followed. The 8.6 on IMDb reflects something real: this was the show that made Netflix's Marvel experiment feel like it had a future. The later seasons are uneven, season two pulling in too many directions with the Punisher and Elektra storylines competing for space, but the third season largely recovered by returning focus to Fisk.

Among Marvel's Netflix shows, Daredevil was the one that held together longest and most consistently. The others either peaked early or never quite got there. What stays with you is D'Onofrio in a white suit, smiling at someone who doesn't yet understand how much trouble they're in.

Netflix cancelling Daredevil in late 2018 came as a genuine shock to fans, given that the show had just delivered what many considered its best season. The ratings were never publicly disclosed, as Netflix kept those numbers close, but the cancellation had less to do with the show's quality or audience engagement and more to do with the shifting business landscape between Netflix and Disney. Disney was preparing to launch its own streaming service, Disney+, and the relationship between the two companies was cooling fast. Marvel's TV properties, which had been built on Netflix under a licensing arrangement, were increasingly a point of tension as Disney moved to consolidate its intellectual property under one roof.

The other Marvel Netflix shows, including Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and eventually Jessica Jones and The Punisher, all met the same fate in roughly the same window. This wasn't a show-by-show judgment call about individual performance. It was a strategic cleanup. Netflix had little incentive to keep investing in characters it didn't own outright, especially knowing those characters might eventually migrate to a competitor's platform, which is precisely what happened when Daredevil was revived on Disney+ years later.

There was also a broader pattern of Netflix pulling back on expensive genre productions around this time as the company started scrutinizing return on investment more carefully. A superhero drama with the production demands of Daredevil is not a cheap show to make. Whatever the internal math looked like, the combination of Disney's strategic exit and Netflix's own evolving priorities made cancellation almost inevitable, regardless of what critics and viewers thought of the show itself.
