It leans hard into noir, into Catholic guilt, into the kind of moral ambiguity that the Marvel films were too broad and too cheerful to accommodate. The thing that makes this show work, more than the fight choreography (though the hallway sequence in Season 1, Episode 2 is extraordinary), is the central tension Charlie Cox builds into Murdock. He is a man who believes in the law and repeatedly violates it, who goes to confession and then beats people half to death in a stairwell. Cox plays this without irony and without winking at the audience. Across the table from him, Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk is one of the great TV villain performances of the decade, a man of real menace wrapped in social awkwardness and strange sentimentality. Season 3 brought Fisk back to the center and was arguably the strongest run of episodes the show produced.

Critics responded warmly, particularly to the first and third seasons, and the show carries an IMDb rating of 8.6 across more than half a million votes, which reflects an audience that felt the cancellation deeply when Netflix pulled the plug. Season 2 is more uneven, splitting its attention between the Punisher and Elektra storylines in ways that dilute both. The show was better when it kept its world small and its stakes personal rather than cosmic.

Among the Netflix Marvel shows, Daredevil was the one that justified the entire experiment. The others had good episodes; this one had sustained seasons. Even at the end, when Fisk is wearing a white suit and maneuvering through the FBI like he owns it, the show remembered what it was about: a man who will not stop, and the city that keeps breaking him anyway.
