What is Marvel's Luke Cage about?

Luke Cage arrives fully formed as a character study of power and accountability wrapped in a crime drama. Mike Colter plays a man with unbreakable skin who doesn't want to be a hero, who resists the label even as he's forced into situations that demand he act like one. The show understands that superstrength is almost beside the point. What matters is that Luke Cage is a Black man in Harlem trying to live quietly while white institutions and Black criminals both have plans for him, and neither cares much what he wants.

The first season moves with real deliberation. Alfre Woodard is magnetic as Mariah Dillard, a politician with a brutal secret, and the show takes time to show how power corrupts, how family trauma breeds monsters, how money and respectability can coexist with violence. There's a soundtrack underneath everything, soul and hip-hop that feels integral rather than decorative. The dialogue sparkles in places. When it works, it feels like prestige television that happens to feature a man who can't be shot.

The second season struggles. A new antagonist (Mustafa Shakir's Bushmaster) arrives with less clarity about what he wants or why we should care, and the show spins its wheels trying to rehabilitate Mariah after she's already been thoroughly explored. Critics found it uneven, audiences drifted, and Netflix cancelled it before the story quite finished. It sits apart from the other Marvel Netflix shows because it was less interested in being a superhero story and more interested in being a portrait of a specific place and a specific man. That ambition was sometimes its strength and sometimes its limitation.

Luke Cage arrived in 2016 as part of Netflix's expanding Marvel universe, riding high on the success of Daredevil and the promise of an interconnected superhero saga. Yet by June 2018, after just two seasons and 26 episodes, Netflix cancelled the show along with its sister series. The cancellation came despite reasonable ratings and an IMDB score of 7.2, suggesting that audience numbers alone did not determine its fate.

Netflix's Marvel partnership was deteriorating by 2018. The streamer and Disney were heading toward a split, with Disney preparing to launch its own streaming service and reclaim its television properties. Rather than invest in ongoing seasons of shows owned by Disney, Netflix chose to wind down its Marvel slate. Luke Cage was caught in this corporate reconfiguration. The second season had already aired to modest viewership, and rather than commit resources to a third installment, Netflix opted to cancel and redirect those funds elsewhere.

The timing was particularly harsh for Luke Cage because it left the show without a proper ending. The character did appear in the Defenders miniseries to wrap up some threads, but Luke Cage itself never got a finale season to resolve its own narrative. By late 2018, all of Netflix's Marvel shows were gone, victims not of failure but of a licensing agreement coming to an end and two corporations diverging in their streaming ambitions.
