What is Arrow about?

Arrow launched in 2012 as a grounded, brooding take on the Green Arrow comics, and whatever its later flaws, it deserves credit for proving that superhero television could be taken seriously before Marvel and DC had fully colonized streaming. Stephen Amell plays Oliver Queen, a billionaire who returns from five years of apparent death on a remote island and starts shooting bad guys with a bow. That premise sounds ridiculous, and Arrow never entirely escapes that, but in its early seasons it commits hard to a noir-ish, street-level version of Starling City that feels genuinely grim for network TV.

The show's signature move is the island flashback, cutting between present-day vigilante work and past trauma to build Oliver's psychology across multiple seasons. It works well at first, giving the show a structural identity that separates it from its superhero peers. By the middle seasons, though, the flashbacks become an obligation the writers seem to resent as much as audiences do. The tone swings around considerably over eight seasons, from the early Christopher Nolan influence to sillier, more comic-booky territory as the show spawned spinoffs and Arrow itself became just one piece of the CW's sprawling "Arrowverse."

Critics were warm in the early going, praising its willingness to be dark and its reasonably tight plotting. Audiences responded strongly enough to make it a genuine hit for The CW, though ratings declined significantly by the later seasons. The consensus is that seasons one and two represent the show at its best, with a gradual diminishing of returns after that. David Ramsey as Diggle is consistently one of the better things about the series, a steadying presence when the scripts around him get messy.

It is worth watching the first two seasons even now. The final season, a compressed eight-episode run tied to the crossover event "Crisis on Infinite Earths," functions more as a farewell to the Arrowverse broadly than a satisfying conclusion to Oliver's story on its own terms. That is probably fitting for a show that ended up mattering more as a foundation for other things than as a self-contained achievement.

Ratings had declined steadily over the back half of the show's run. The earlier seasons drew strong numbers for The CW, but by seasons six and seven the audience had thinned considerably. That kind of erosion is common for long-running genre shows, and it almost certainly factored into the decision to wrap things up rather than push for a ninth season. The CW and the producers were not in denial about where things stood.

What makes Arrow's ending somewhat cleaner than most is that Oliver's death in "Crisis on Infinite Earths" gave the character a genuine narrative conclusion. The show did not limp to a cancellation. It wound down with a short final season designed specifically to close the story, which is a better exit than most superhero shows get. Whether the final seasons fully earned that goodbye is another question, but the ending itself was planned and deliberate.
