What is Arrow about?

Arrow launched in 2012 as a fairly serious-minded superhero show at a time when The CW was not exactly known for serious-minded anything. Stephen Amell plays Oliver Queen, a billionaire who returns from five years of trauma on a remote island and decides to fight crime with a bow and arrow, which sounds ridiculous but the show commits to its brooding, Batman-inflected tone hard enough that it mostly works, at least early on. The flashback structure, cutting between Oliver's present vigilante work and the island years that made him, gives the first few seasons a genuine narrative engine.

The show's best stretch is roughly seasons one through three, when it treats its comic-book source material as something to be adapted rather than simply transcribed, and when the writers were still willing to let Oliver be a morally compromised figure. It is dark for a network show, occasionally brutal, and intermittently quite good at courtroom-style procedural plotting layered under the superhero action. The trouble is that Arrow also spawned a shared DC universe across The CW, and the demands of that franchise, including crossover events, spin-off setups, and the general inflation of stakes toward world-ending threats, pushed the show away from the street-level crime drama that made it work.

Critics were warm in the early years, less so as the seasons accumulated. Audiences followed a similar arc: strong ratings in seasons one and two, then a gradual drift that the show tried to correct several times with cast shakeups and tonal resets. The final season, a truncated farewell tied to the massive Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, functioned more as a sendoff for the Arrowverse than as a proper conclusion to Oliver Queen's story.

What Arrow did that still matters is prove that a DC superhero could anchor eight seasons of network television without being campy about it. The show had real discipline in its first act. The final image of Oliver Queen is essentially a cosmic sacrifice in someone else's crossover event, which is probably the most honest possible summary of what eventually happened to the show itself.
