Peter Morgan always conceived The Crown as a finite story. From early on he structured the series in pairs of seasons, recasting the leads every two seasons as the royals aged, and he planned to stop somewhere in the 1990s or early 2000s rather than chase the present day. Six seasons and sixty episodes was essentially the shape he had in mind, covering Elizabeth II's reign from the postwar years through the fallout of Diana's death and its aftermath. When that story reached its natural stopping point, the show stopped.

Netflix was happy enough to let it end on those terms. The Crown was never a ratings juggernaut in the conventional sense, but it was a prestige flagship, the kind of series that won awards and attracted subscribers and gave the platform a certain cultural seriousness. By the time Season 6 arrived in late 2023, the show had been running for seven years and the casting had turned over twice. There was also a real question, which Morgan acknowledged publicly, about how close to living memory the series could responsibly travel. Dramatizing Diana's death and the immediate royal response was already contentious. Going further would have meant fictionalizing people who are very much alive and events that are recent enough to be politically and legally fraught.

So this is a case of a show that ended because its creator decided it was done, and the network agreed.
