What is The Tudors about?

Showtime's version of Henry VIII has very little patience for dusty pageantry. Michael Hirst's series gives us a king who is vain, magnetic, and genuinely dangerous, played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers with cheekbones that could cut glass and a fury that feels personal rather than historical. The show begins in the early years of Henry's reign and moves through the wives, the executions, the religious upheaval, and the political maneuvering with real momentum. It is not a documentary. It is not trying to be.

The tone is closer to prestige soap than to academic history, and that is not necessarily a criticism. The sex scenes are frequent and the costumes are lush, but what holds the thing together is a genuine interest in power: who has it, who wants it, and what people will do to keep it. Henry Cavill appears as Charles Brandon and is quite good. The supporting cast, rotating through wives and courtiers and doomed advisers, manages to make figures you know the fates of feel precarious anyway.

Critics were somewhat divided, with the historical liberties frustrating purists while others appreciated that the show was at least watchable and often gripping. Audiences responded warmly, and the 8.1 on IMDb from a substantial number of voters suggests the show found a loyal following that stuck with it across four seasons. It ran until Henry was old and ill and had burned through nearly everyone around him, which gave it a more complete arc than many cable dramas manage.

Compared to something like Wolf Hall, which treats the same period with far more restraint and psychological care, The Tudors is flashier and less interested in ambiguity. But Wolf Hall came later, and for years this show was the main event for anyone who wanted the English court rendered in full color on a Sunday night. What it does best is make you feel the claustrophobia of being close to Henry, the way his favor and his wrath are two sides of the same terrifying coin.

Creator Michael Hirst designed the series around a finite historical arc, and Showtime gave it four seasons to complete that arc. This wasn't a case of declining ratings forcing anyone's hand. The show was one of Showtime's more successful prestige dramas of its era, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers had become closely identified with the role. But the history itself set the clock.

There's something almost unusual about a premium cable drama in that period ending on its own terms rather than getting stretched or cut short. Hirst knew where the story ended because history told him. The fourth season finale is essentially an adaptation of a death scene that was always coming. The Tudors concluded because it was finished, not because anyone decided to finish it.
