What is Californication about?

Californication arrived on Showtime in 2007 as a vehicle almost perfectly calibrated to David Duchovny's particular brand of sardonic, hangdog charm. He plays Hank Moody, a New York novelist beached in Los Angeles, pining for the woman he loves, Karen, while systematically destroying every good thing that drifts within reach. The premise sounds like a therapy intake form, but the show works because Duchovny makes Hank's self-destruction oddly watchable. You find yourself rooting for a man you would almost certainly despise in real life.

The tone is unrepentantly hedonistic and plays it mostly for laughs, which is both the show's appeal and its recurring problem. Creator Tom Kapinos loads each episode with sexual misadventure, sharp-ish dialogue, and the reliable comic rhythm of Evan Handler's Charlie Runkle lurching from one humiliation to the next. Pamela Adlon brings something more grounded to Marcy, Charlie's long-suffering wife, and she's frequently the most interesting person in any scene she's in. The Los Angeles setting is used well, the entertainment industry providing an endlessly renewable supply of frauds and sycophants for Hank to condescend to.

Critics appreciated the show's breezy irreverence in its early seasons, and Duchovny won a Golden Globe for the role in 2009. Audience scores remain warm, reflected in that strong IMDb rating. The common consensus, though, is that the show wore out its premise well before the seventh season. Hank Moody is a character defined by his inability to change, which gives the early seasons their darkly funny energy but eventually leaves the show running in circles. There are only so many times watching a man choose whiskey and a stranger over everything decent in his life feels like comedy rather than just repetition.

What the show gets consistently right, even in its weaker stretches, is the relationship between Hank and Karen, played by Natascha McElhone with a quiet exasperation that never tips into caricature. Californication was always built around a single, self-destructive character archetype, the brilliant writer who can't stop sabotaging everything good in his life, and that premise has a natural ceiling. You can only watch a man fall down and get back up so many times before the pattern stops feeling like drama and starts feeling like a habit.

Showtime gave the series a proper runway, and creator Tom Kapinos brought it to a close on his own terms rather than having it yanked away. By season seven, the ratings had softened considerably from the show's peak years, and the critical conversation had largely moved on. The show never quite recaptured the raw energy of its early seasons, and Kapinos and the network both seemed to understand that pushing into an eighth season would have meant extending something that had already said what it came to say.

David Duchovny remained committed to the role throughout, but even his charm couldn't indefinitely sustain a character whose redemption arc kept resetting. The finale gave Hank something close to resolution, which is about as much as the show's premise ever allowed. Ending at seven seasons was the right call. It let Californication finish as a flawed but fondly remembered piece of prestige cable rather than outstay its welcome entirely.
