Masters of Sex arrives with a genuinely unusual premise for prestige television: two real people who spent decades measuring, cataloguing, and filming human sexual response in clinical detail, and whose personal entanglement was at least as complicated as anything they studied. Michael Sheen plays William Masters as a man whose emotional life seems to have been surgically removed, brilliant and cold in ways that frustrate even as they fascinate. Lizzy Caplan's Virginia Johnson is the more interesting creation, a woman with no formal credentials navigating a professional world that refuses to take her seriously while she is, in practice, the better scientist of the two.

The show is set in a specific American moment, the late 1950s and into the 1960s, and it wears that period with care. Race, class, and gender are not background decoration here. Caitlin FitzGerald's Libby Masters gets more interesting as the series progresses, and Annaleigh Ashford as Betty brings a rougher, funnier energy that cuts through the sometimes airless atmosphere of the hospital corridors. The tone is cool and observational, which suits the subject. When it works, the series has the patience to let a scene simply sit in its own discomfort.

The first two seasons earned strong reviews and a devoted audience. Critics responded warmly to the central performances and to the show's willingness to treat its subject as science rather than titillation. Later seasons were more divisive, with many feeling the writers pushed the time-jump structure too aggressively and lost track of what made the early episodes work. Ratings declined, and Showtime cancelled it after four seasons.

What the show does best, it does in the details: the quiet indignity of Virginia being introduced as Masters's secretary when she is his research partner, or the way Masters's professional certainty coexists with his inability to understand a single person he loves. Those moments are worth more than the occasionally clumsy plotting around them.
