What is Stargate SG-1 about?

Stargate SG-1 ran for ten seasons, which tells you something right there. Starting on Showtime in 1997 as a spinoff of the Roland Emmerich film, it outlasted nearly every sci-fi series of its era and ended up one of the longest-running North American sci-fi shows ever made. The basic setup is functional, not visionary: a military team walks through a portal to other planets, fights alien threats, and saves Earth repeatedly. What kept people watching was not the mythology, which grew increasingly baroque, but the chemistry of the team and a tone that never took itself too seriously without becoming a parody of itself.

That tone is the show's real achievement. SG-1 is fundamentally a workplace show in which the workplace happens to involve interplanetary travel. Richard Dean Anderson's Jack O'Neill, sardonic and impatient with technobabble, set the register early, and the writers leaned into it. The humor is dry and self-aware without winking too hard at the audience. Alongside the jokes, the show also committed to genuine mythology-building, pulling from Egyptian, Norse, and eventually Arthurian and Christian iconography. The results were uneven but never boring, and the series had the patience to let its villains evolve over multiple seasons.

Audiences responded warmly for most of the run, and the IMDb rating of 8.4 reflects a fanbase that stayed loyal. Critical coverage was thinner, with the show largely treated as solid genre entertainment, not prestige television. The later seasons, after Anderson's reduced role and the cast additions of Ben Browder and Claudia Black from Farscape, divided viewers. Some found the injection of new energy welcome; others felt it confirmed the show had run past its natural endpoint.

Compared to its contemporaries, SG-1 sits closer to The X-Files than to Babylon 5 in its willingness to mix standalone adventure plots with serialized arcs. Ten seasons and 214 episodes is a genuinely remarkable run for a science fiction series, and Stargate SG-1 essentially outlasted its own premise. By the time it ended in 2007, the show had been on the air for a decade, had already spun off Stargate Atlantis, and had long since resolved the central Goa'uld storyline that drove its earliest years. The later seasons introduced new villains, the Ori among them, but there's a sense that the writers were working hard to keep a mythology fresh that had naturally run its course.

The show moved from Showtime to Sci Fi Channel after its fifth season, and that transition actually extended its life considerably. But by season ten, Sci Fi had Atlantis running alongside it and was developing what would become Stargate Universe. Carrying two active Stargate series while planning a third was a lot, and the economics of that decision almost certainly factored into SG-1 wrapping up when it did. The network chose not to renew for an eleventh season, which technically makes this a cancellation rather than a purely voluntary conclusion, though the creative team was given the opportunity to wrap the story through two direct-to-DVD films, The Ark of Truth and Continuum, released in 2008.

So the ending is somewhere between a planned conclusion and an abrupt stop. The show didn't go out on its own terms entirely, but it wasn't left completely unresolved either. For a franchise that built such a loyal audience over so many years, the DVD films were a reasonable if imperfect send-off, and the overall run is hard to argue with.
