What is Star Trek: Enterprise about?

Enterprise is the Star Trek prequel nobody asked for in 2001, set a century before Kirk and Spock, following Captain Jonathan Archer as he commands humanity's first serious warp-capable ship into a galaxy that hasn't yet learned to tolerate us. The appeal, in theory, is getting to see Starfleet before it became Starfleet, when the rules weren't written and humans were genuinely the naive newcomers. Scott Bakula brings a decent, earnest quality to Archer, and the alien doctor Phlox, played by John Billingsley, is among the more interesting recurring characters the franchise produced in this era.

The show took years to find a useful identity. The first two seasons are fitfully watchable but creatively adrift, running largely on franchise familiarity with no clear sense of what Enterprise specifically wanted to say. Creators Brannon Braga and Rick Berman, who had shepherded Trek through the 1990s boom years, seemed to misread what audiences wanted from a prequel. Season three's extended Xindi arc introduced serialized storytelling and raised the stakes considerably, and the fourth season, under showrunner Manny Coto, finally started treating the prequel premise as an asset by digging into the lore and mythology that longtime fans actually cared about. It was, by most accounts, too late.

Audience reception was a slow bleed. Ratings declined steadily across the run, and UPN cancelled the show after four seasons, making it the first Trek series since the original to be cut short against its producers' wishes. Critical opinion was mixed throughout, and remains so. The show has a devoted base of defenders, particularly for season four, but it also has a large contingent who feel it simply wasn't necessary. Both reactions are understandable.

What sticks with you, watching it now, is the frustration of potential not fully realized. The Vulcans are written as subtle antagonists for much of the run, slow-walking humanity's progress out of cultural condescension, and that tension is the most interesting thing the show does. When it leans into that friction, and into the idea that the Federation's founding ideals had to be argued for and earned rather than assumed, Enterprise is at its most alive.

Enterprise arrived in 2001 carrying enormous expectations as the fifth live-action Star Trek series, but it had the misfortune of launching into a post-9/11 television landscape where audiences were shifting, and into a franchise that had arguably been overextended across the previous decade. The original series premiere drew around 12 million viewers, which was respectable, but the numbers declined steadily year after year. By the fourth season, Enterprise was pulling in somewhere around three to four million viewers on UPN, a network that was itself struggling for relevance and reach. At those levels, no drama series is a safe bet to continue.

The frustrating irony is that Season 4, developed largely under showrunner Manny Coto, was widely considered the best the show ever produced. It leaned into continuity-rich storytelling and felt genuinely connected to the larger Star Trek universe in ways the earlier seasons often did not. Fans who had drifted away during the rougher early years did not return in sufficient numbers to matter for the ratings, and the audience goodwill that Season 4 generated among core fans arrived too late to save it. UPN was not going to carry a low-rated drama as a favor to Trek loyalists.

There was also a broader sense of franchise fatigue. Star Trek had been in continuous television production since 1987, and by the mid-2000s the appetite for weekly episodic science fiction in that mold had diminished considerably. Enterprise suffered for that exhaustion as much as for its own early missteps. UPN cancelled it after four seasons, and the cancellation stung especially because the show had finally found its footing just as the plug was pulled.
