What is Farscape about?

Farscape starts with a premise that sounds simple enough: American astronaut gets flung to the far end of the universe and tries to get home. What it does with that premise over four seasons is anything but simple. John Crichton, played by Ben Browder with a kind of frantic, increasingly ragged charm, ends up aboard Moya, a living ship populated by escaped alien prisoners, and the show spends the better part of four years making him stranger, more broken, and more interesting than almost any protagonist on television at the time.

The tone is hard to pin down, which was probably both the show's greatest strength and the reason it never found a mass audience. It could be genuinely funny, almost slapstick, in one scene, and then brutally dark in the next. The alien designs leaned heavily on Jim Henson Company puppetry, and characters like Rygel and Pilot had more personality than most fully human characters on competing shows. Claudia Black as Aeryn Sun, a soldier slowly losing her certainty about everything she was trained to be, gave the show an emotional anchor it badly needed. Scorpius, the recurring villain played by Wayne Pygram in unsettling prosthetics, became one of the more layered antagonists of the era. The show was willing to be weird, and it wore that willingness openly.

Critical reception was warm but uneven, and ratings were never spectacular enough to give the show security. Its cancellation after season four, before the planned finale could air, became something of a cause for fans, who campaigned loudly enough that a concluding miniseries, The Peacekeeper Wars, eventually arrived. The IMDb score of 8.3 from a devoted but relatively small base tells you exactly what kind of show this is: one that inspires real loyalty rather than broad recognition.

Compared to the glossier American science fiction of the same period, Farscape feels scrappier and more willing to let its characters suffer consequences that actually stick. Where a show like Stargate kept things relatively comfortable, Farscape kept pulling the rug out.
