Kristen Bell plays her with a sharp, sardonic wit that never tips into self-pity, and the show around her is unusually tight for its genre, weaving season-long mysteries through episodic cases in a way that rewards patience without punishing casual viewers.

Creator Rob Thomas writes the wealthy kids and the working-class kids with equal skepticism, which gives Neptune a believable social texture. The comedy is real, not just tonal relief. The relationship between Veronica and her father Keith, played with quiet warmth by Enrico Colantoni, is one of the better parent-child dynamics on television from that era, built on mutual respect rather than the usual generational friction. Jason Dohring's Logan starts as the show's most cartoonish villain and becomes something considerably more interesting, which is either good writing or good luck, probably both.

When it aired on UPN in 2004, the show found a devoted but frustratingly small audience. Critics noticed it immediately and championed it loudly, which gave it a cultural footprint larger than its ratings justified. It became a cause, then a cult, and eventually the subject of a Kickstarter-funded movie and, years later, a fourth season on Hulu. That fourth season divides fans sharply. It is darker and more cynical, trading the high school energy for something closer to actual noir, and it ends with a choice that felt to many viewers like a punishment rather than a conclusion.

The first two seasons hold up as some of the best mystery television of the 2000s. Season three, set in college, loses some focus.
