He plays Red as a man who is never quite where you think he is, delivering baroque monologues about obscure cheeses or childhood memories while orchestrating something catastrophic in the background. The show gives him room to be funny, menacing, and genuinely sad, sometimes within the same scene, and he fills every inch of it.

The formula is procedural: each episode introduces a new criminal from Red's list, the FBI pursues them, Red assists for reasons that are never entirely clean. But the show layers a serialized mystery underneath, centered on who Red really is and what he wants from rookie profiler Elizabeth Keen. That mystery is where The Blacklist gets complicated as a recommendation. It builds intrigue well across its early seasons, but the answers, when they eventually arrive, tend to disappoint. Ten seasons is a long time to sustain a central secret, and the show's willingness to reverse, delay, and complicate its own mythology eventually tests patience more than it rewards it.

But like a lot of mythology-heavy procedurals, it struggled to sustain the central mystery, and the question of who Reddington really was to Megan Boone's Liz Keen became increasingly convoluted. When Boone departed after season 8, the show lost its structural anchor, and NBC and the producers essentially had to reinvent it on the fly.

The final stretch of the show's life was complicated by that departure. Ratings had been declining steadily for years, which is not unusual for a network drama in its eighth, ninth, or tenth year, but the loss of Boone accelerated the sense that the show was running on fumes.
