More than that, several cast members, Jennifer Aniston especially, were signaling that they were ready to move on to film careers. When key people in a show that is essentially an ensemble piece start looking toward the door, the creative logic of continuing gets harder to defend.

Creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman had also been fairly open that they felt the natural end of the story was arriving. Ross and Rachel's relationship had been the gravitational center of the show since the pilot, and resolving it gave the finale a genuine sense of conclusion rather than a cliffhanger designed to hook another season.
