What is The King of Queens about?

Doug Heffernan is a UPS deliveryman living in Queens who wants simple things: his couch, his food, his television. The arrival of his father-in-law Arthur Spooner, a manic, self-absorbed retiree played by Jerry Stiller, destroys that equilibrium permanently. That's the setup, and for nine seasons the show wrings a surprising amount of comedy out of it without ever really changing the formula.

The show is squarely in the tradition of working-class domestic sitcoms, and it knows exactly what it is. Kevin James has genuine physical comedy chops, and he commits fully to every pratfall and double-take. Leah Remini is sharper than the wife role usually allows, and she and James have real chemistry that keeps the central marriage from feeling like just another sparring arrangement. But the show belongs to Stiller. Arthur is a magnificent creation, paranoid and pompous and somehow always wronged, and Stiller plays him with total conviction. When the episode centers on Arthur, it's usually the best version of this show.

Audiences responded accordingly. It was a CBS staple for nearly a decade, drawing the kind of steady, loyal viewership that the network built its Monday and Thursday nights on. Critics were less enthusiastic, treating it as competent at best, and that assessment isn't entirely unfair. The show rarely surprises, the supporting characters around Deacon and Spence are underused, and late seasons start to feel like a machine running on habit.

Still, a bad episode of The King of Queens is still watchable because of Stiller. That's not nothing for a show that ran 207 episodes.

The King of Queens ran for nine seasons and 207 episodes on CBS, which by any measure is a full and complete run. This was not a show cut down early. It simply reached the natural end of its life, the way most long-running network sitcoms do when the creative well starts running dry and everyone involved decides it's time to move on.

By 2007, the show had been on the air for nearly a decade and had settled into a comfortable but predictable groove. The central premise, a working-class guy in Queens navigating marriage and his eccentric father-in-law, had been explored from pretty much every angle available to it. Ratings had remained decent through much of its run, but there was no compelling reason to keep pushing forward. Kevin James was increasingly in demand as a film actor, which likely made the calculus of continuing a weekly sitcom less appealing for everyone involved.

CBS at that point was also gradually shifting its Monday and Friday comedy lineups, and the network had younger shows coming up. Nine seasons is a long time, and the cast and producers had every reason to feel they'd said what they had to say. The finale aired in May 2007 and brought the show to a close on its own terms, which is honestly the best outcome a sitcom of this kind can hope for.
