What is Hawaii Five-0 about?

Steve McGarrett is a Navy SEAL who comes back to Hawaii to investigate his father's murder and ends up running an elite state task force with nearly unlimited authority to bend rules and break doors. That premise is essentially a permission slip for ten seasons of sun-drenched procedural mayhem, and CBS was happy to cash it.

The show is straightforwardly entertaining in the way that a lot of network crime dramas are not, because it commits fully to its own absurdity. McGarrett and his partner Danny argue like a long-married couple while driving stolen cars and shooting at cartel operatives. The Hawaiian locations are gorgeous and the show knows it, using them as a constant backdrop rather than incidental scenery. The tone is light even when people are dying, which either reads as breezy fun or tonal incoherence depending on your patience for this kind of thing.

Audiences loved it for years. CBS built Friday nights around it, and the ratings held up well into the middle seasons before the inevitable erosion. Critical reception was always warmer from viewers than from reviewers, who generally found it competent but not particularly interesting, a show that knew its lane and stayed in it. The cast turnover over ten years was significant, with original regulars Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park departing after season seven in a dispute reportedly tied to pay equity, which left a real gap in the show's chemistry that the replacement characters never quite filled.

Compared to the original 1968 series it resets, this version is looser, funnier, and far more invested in serialized mythology around McGarrett's family. The ongoing story of his father's murder and the shadowy conspiracy surrounding it gave the show a spine that pure procedurals lack. Whether the show actually resolved that spine satisfyingly over a decade is a fair question, but the banter between O'Loughlin and Scott Caan was good enough that plenty of viewers kept watching regardless of the plot.
