What is Married... with Children about?

Al Bundy sells shoes in a Chicago suburb, comes home to a couch and a bag of chips, and loudly wishes he were somewhere else. That's essentially the whole show, and for eleven seasons it was enough. Created by Michael G. Moye and Ron Leavitt, Married... with Children launched Fox's primetime identity in 1987 and ran long enough to become a cultural institution, which is a strange thing to say about a series that was essentially a sustained howl of working-class despair dressed up as a sitcom.

The tone is the point. Where contemporaries like The Cosby Show presented family life as warm and aspirational, this show went the other way entirely, presenting domestic existence as something to be endured rather than celebrated. Al (Ed O'Neill, doing career-best work that never quite got its due) is defeated but not pathetic, and that distinction matters. He's funny because he keeps fighting, not because he's given up. Katey Sagal's Peggy is a genuinely strange creation, a woman who seems to run on spite and bad television, and the show never quite decides whether she's a monster or a survivor.

The show drew protest groups and hand-wringing thinkpieces early in its run, which probably helped more than it hurt. Audiences responded warmly, and that 8.1 rating on IMDb across a large sample suggests genuine affection rather than mere nostalgia. Critics at the time were more dismissive, treating it as lowbrow provocation, though it looks sharper in retrospect as a document of a specific kind of American resentment.

What's easy to miss now is how strange Christina Applegate's performance as Kelly Bundy actually is. She commits so fully to the bit that the character stops being a joke and becomes something almost surreal.

Married... with Children ran for eleven seasons on FOX, which is a remarkably long stretch for any sitcom, let alone one that spent its early years generating controversy and protests from advertisers. By the mid-1990s, the show had simply run its course. The Bundy family's brand of crude, gleefully anti-sentimental humor had been genuinely subversive when it launched in 1987, but a decade later the cultural landscape had shifted enough that Al's shoe store misery and the family's relentless dysfunction felt more familiar than shocking.

Ed O'Neill was increasingly restless with the role by the later seasons, and there was a sense that the creative team had explored most of what the premise had to offer. The ratings, while still respectable, had declined from the show's peak years. FOX itself had also matured as a network. The channel that once needed Married... with Children to establish its scrappy, rule-breaking identity had built a much broader slate by the late 1990s, and the show no longer carried the same strategic importance it once did.

The ending in 1997 was not a sudden cancellation but more of a gradual mutual recognition that the run was complete. There was no proper series finale, which left fans with an odd sense of closure, but the show had lasted far longer than most predicted when it debuted. Eleven seasons and 258 episodes is a full life for any television series, and Married... with Children got to have one.
