What is House about?

Hugh Laurie spent eight seasons playing Gregory House as one of television's great performances, and that fact alone explains why the show ran as long as it did. House is a medical procedural built around a doctor who is brilliant, addicted to Vicodin, and genuinely unpleasant to almost everyone around him. The weekly formula is simple: a patient arrives with a mysterious illness, the team guesses wrong several times, and House figures it out at the last minute, usually while doing something else entirely. That sounds thin, and sometimes it is. But Laurie makes House worth watching even when the writing coasts.

The show's tone is sharper than most network dramas of its era. David Shore was clearly interested in using the medical cases as a vehicle for arguing about honesty, ethics, and whether a person's character has any bearing on their worth. House himself is the show's running thesis: he is rude, manipulative, and almost always right, and the series never quite decides how to feel about that. The friendship between House and his oncologist friend Wilson, played by Robert Sean Leonard, provides most of the show's genuine warmth and also, in the later seasons, its most affecting drama.

Critics loved it early. The show was a legitimate hit for FOX and earned consistent Emmy attention for Laurie, whose American accent alone deserved some kind of technical award. Audiences stayed loyal through the middle seasons even as the supporting cast rotated and the cases grew more elaborate. The final seasons lost some viewers and some critics, and honestly the quality did slip, particularly once the show ran out of interesting ways to torment its main character.

Where House distinguishes itself from other procedurals is in how stubbornly it resists likability as a goal. The character is not redeemed by the end in any conventional sense. House remains House, and the finale, whatever its flaws, respects that enough to let him leave on his own terms rather than as a lesson learned.

House ran for eight seasons and 176 episodes, which by any measure is a full and complete television life. The show didn't get cancelled, it concluded. By the time the eighth season wrapped in 2012, the series had been on the air for the better part of a decade, and the creative team had clearly been steering toward a conclusion rather than searching for new stories to tell. Hugh Laurie's Gregory House had been taken to about as dark a place as network television would allow, and the writers had spent years testing how far they could push a character who was, fundamentally, self-destructive and resistant to change.

The ratings had declined significantly from the show's peak years in the mid-to-late 2000s, when it was one of the most-watched dramas on American television. By seasons seven and eight, the audience had thinned considerably. The departure of Lisa Edelstein after season seven, which drew real attention at the time, was a visible sign that the ensemble holding the show together was shifting. Omar Epps, Jesse Spencer, and others had been there since the beginning, and there's a natural fatigue that sets in for a cast after nearly a decade.

FOX and the producers made a mutual decision to end things with season eight rather than drag the show past its natural stopping point. The finale gave House a real ending, which suggests this was a planned conclusion rather than a plug being pulled. That's actually the better outcome for a show of this quality. A lot of long-running dramas get cancelled mid-story; House got to finish.
