The show is at its best when the case of the week brushes up against something House actually feels, and at its worst when it mistakes cruelty for wit. Creator David Shore gave the writers enough rope to explore genuine moral complexity, and occasionally enough to hang themselves with extended metaphors about addiction and self-destruction.

Critical response was enthusiastic early on. The show earned Emmy nominations and strong ratings, and Laurie won Golden Globes for his work here. Audiences stayed loyal through considerable cast turnover across the seasons, though there's a widespread view that the show peaked somewhere around its third or fourth season and then began recycling its own dynamics with diminishing returns.

What stays with you is less the medicine and more the specific texture of Laurie's performance, the way House can make a throwaway insult feel like it cost him something to deliver.

Hugh Laurie's Gregory House had been taken to about as dark a place as network television would allow, and the writers had spent years testing how far they could push a character who was, fundamentally, self-destructive and resistant to change.

The ratings had declined significantly from the show's peak years in the mid-to-late 2000s, when it was one of the most-watched dramas on American television. By seasons seven and eight, the audience had thinned considerably. The departure of Lisa Edelstein after season seven, which drew real attention at the time, was a visible sign that the ensemble holding the show together was shifting. Omar Epps, Jesse Spencer, and others had been there since the beginning, and there's a natural fatigue that sets in for a cast after nearly a decade.

FOX and the producers made a mutual decision to end things with season eight rather than drag the show past its natural stopping point. The finale gave House a real ending, which suggests this was a planned conclusion rather than a plug being pulled. That's actually the better outcome for a show of this quality.
