Addison Montgomery was always the most interesting person in any room on Grey's Anatomy, which made her spinoff feel like a reasonable bet. She trades Seattle rain for Santa Monica sun, joins a boutique wellness practice run by old friends, and the show spends six seasons asking whether a brilliant woman who has everything can still feel completely adrift. That is a reasonable question, and Kate Walsh carries it with more intelligence than the scripts usually deserve.

The tone is warmer and soapier than Grey's, which is saying something. Private Practice leans into romantic entanglement and personal crisis over surgical spectacle, and the ensemble of therapists, pediatricians, and OB-GYNs means the cases tend toward the emotionally raw rather than the medically spectacular. At its best, particularly in the later seasons, the show commits to genuine darkness. A storyline involving Charlotte King's assault in season four is handled with a seriousness that surprised most viewers, and KaDee Strickland's performance across that arc is the best acting the show ever produced. Amy Brenneman's Violet, a psychiatrist who writes a book about her patients, is another strong thread, though the show never quite decides how much it wants to punish her for it.

Critics were largely lukewarm, treating it as a lesser Shonda Rhimes product, which is fair in structural terms but undersells what the cast occasionally accomplishes. Audiences liked it well enough to keep it running six seasons, though ratings declined steadily from a strong debut. The 6.8 on IMDb reflects a show that attracted devoted fans without ever breaking into must-see conversation.

Private Practice got noticeably better as it got darker. The breezy beach-town setup of the early episodes, all flirtation and sunlight, gives way to a show willing to sit with grief and consequence.
