Addison Montgomery arrived on Private Practice as a transplant from Grey's Anatomy, where she had already survived one of primetime's more brutal introductions: walking in on her husband and her best friend. Kate Walsh made Addison fascinating enough in that role that ABC and Shonda Rhimes built a spinoff around her, relocating her to a beachside wellness clinic in Santa Monica where she could theoretically start over. The promise of that setup, a sharp, complicated woman rebuilding her life, is more appealing on paper than it sometimes is on screen.

The show sits in a strange tonal middle ground. Grey's Anatomy leaned into its own melodrama with a kind of self-aware glee, but Private Practice often played things straighter and heavier. The cases got dark, frequently darker than expected, touching on rape, addiction, and infant death with a seriousness that felt at odds with the sunny California aesthetic and the sitcom-adjacent banter among the clinic's staff. That contrast is either the show's distinguishing quality or its persistent problem, depending on your tolerance. KaDee Strickland as Charlotte King is genuinely one of the better characters Rhimes's writers produced in this era, and her storylines give the series its sharpest edges.

Critics were never especially warm to it. Reviews tended to acknowledge the cast while finding the ensemble dynamic thin compared to its parent show, and ratings, strong at first, declined over its six seasons. Audiences who stayed tended to stay for specific characters rather than the show as a whole.

For viewers who wanted more Addison specifically, Private Practice delivers. Walsh is good throughout, and the show gives her more to do than Grey's ever really did.
