When Does High Potential Season 3 Come Out? Is It Renewed?

What is High Potential about?

Kaitlin Olson plays Morgan Gillory, a single mother working as a cleaning woman for the police department who keeps solving murders she isn't supposed to be anywhere near. That premise could easily tip into farce or into the dreary procedural wheel-spinning that fills basic cable, but Drew Goddard, who created the show for ABC, keeps enough tension between those two instincts to make it watchable in a way that network crime drama rarely is anymore.

The tone is the thing here. Olson built her career on Dee Reynolds in "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," a character defined by chaos and selfishness, and there's a pleasant friction in watching her play someone fundamentally decent but still messy, still sharp-elbowed, still funny in ways that feel earned rather than scripted. Her chemistry with Daniel Sunjata's detective Karadec, the by-the-book foil, avoids the will-they-won't-they stalling that usually ruins this kind of pairing because the show is more interested in how differently they think than in whether they'll eventually kiss. Judy Reyes provides good, dry ballast in the precinct scenes.

Audiences responded warmly. An IMDb rating of 7.5 across nearly 50,000 votes suggests real affection, not just polite approval, and the show was renewed for a second season, which is no small thing for an ABC drama in the current environment. Critics were generally positive about Olson's performance even when they had reservations about the procedural scaffolding underneath, which is fair. The cases are sometimes thinner than the character work deserves.

What keeps "High Potential" from being just another CBS-style crime procedural that found the wrong network is how much it trusts Olson to carry scenes on personality alone. A lot of network drama is afraid of its own lead. This one isn't.
