Michael Emerson arrived mid-series as Benjamin Linus and immediately became the most interesting person on screen. The ensemble is large and uneven, but at its best the show used its sprawl to give minor characters room to breathe.

The backlash, when it came, was proportional to the investment people had made. The finale in 2010 resolved the emotional arcs while leaving the mythology in a state that many viewers considered evasive.
