What is Lord of the Flies about?

Jack Thorne and director Marc Munden chose television's slower burn to let the island's psychological deterioration breathe, and for the most part that instinct pays off. What a miniseries format can do that a film cannot is make you genuinely like these boys before things go wrong, and Winston Sawyers as Ralph and David McKenna as Piggy build a friendship that carries real weight.

The tone is less allegorical exercise and more grounded survival drama, which is both a strength and a mild disappointment depending on what you want from the source material. Munden shoots the island with a humid, oppressive beauty that makes the landscape feel hostile from the first episode, and the gradual shift in how the boys carry themselves, their posture, their language, their willingness to look each other in the eye, is handled with care. Lox Pratt's Jack is convincingly frightening without being a cartoon villain, which matters enormously.

Critical reception was warm if not ecstatic. Most reviewers praised the performances and the production, while a few noted that compression into four episodes still left some characters underdeveloped. Roger in particular, who needs to register as genuinely dangerous for the story's climax to land, gets less room than he needs.

It is worth noting that this is a small cast of largely young and unknown actors carrying an adaptation that everyone in the audience already knows the ending of, and the fact that it remains tense anyway is a genuine achievement. The final episode does not flinch.
