What is Peaky Blinders about?

Peaky Blinders announced its intentions early: this was not going to be a period drama in the heritage television mold. Steven Knight set his gangster saga in the grime and rubble of post-World War One Birmingham, and the show wore that industrial bleakness like armor. Cillian Murphy plays Thomas Shelby with such controlled intensity that the character sometimes feels less like a person than a weather system, cold and unpredictable, capable of sudden devastation. If you want a crime series with genuine ambition about class, trauma, and the cost of accumulating power, this is one of the better reasons to clear your schedule.

The tone is the most distinctive thing about it. Nick Cave and PJ Harvey on the soundtrack, anachronistic but deliberate, give the show a mythologized quality that distances it from straight historical drama. The direction leans into silhouette and smoke, slow motion and studied cool. This works brilliantly in the early seasons, when the style feels earned, matched by tight plotting and a family dynamic with real friction. Later seasons stretch the formula, moving Tommy into national and international politics in ways that sometimes feel more like accumulation than drama. The show never quite lost the audience, but it did lose some of its grip.

Critics were largely enthusiastic, and the IMDb rating reflects a fanbase that stayed deeply attached across all six seasons. Murphy became a genuine star through the role in ways that television rarely manages. The supporting cast, particularly Paul Anderson as the volatile Arthur, gave the show much of its emotional rawness. Audience response was consistently strong on both sides of the Atlantic, helped by Netflix distributing it internationally.

The show sits in interesting company. It shares DNA with American gangster prestige television but it is distinctly, stubbornly British, concerned with the specific injuries of working class men who came back from the Somme and found no reward waiting. That is the detail that lingers: almost every act of violence in the series traces back to something that happened in a tunnel in France, and the show never lets you entirely forget it.

Peaky Blinders ended because creator Steven Knight decided it was time to stop. Knight had always spoken about having a clear narrative arc in mind for Tommy Shelby, and by season six he brought that arc to a close. This was a planned ending, not a network pulling the plug on something that was still performing. The BBC was very much a willing partner throughout, and the show remained one of their prestige drama flagships right to the finish.

The show did lose something significant going into its final season when Helen McCrory, who played the irreplaceable Aunt Polly, died in 2021. Her absence reshaped what season six could be, and Knight acknowledged as much publicly. Whether that loss accelerated the decision to wrap things up is hard to say with certainty, but it clearly affected the shape of the final episodes and likely reinforced the sense that a natural chapter was closing.

After six seasons and 36 episodes, the story had moved Tommy from post-WWI Birmingham gang boss to a figure entangled in the rise of fascism in 1930s Britain, which is a long journey by any measure. Knight has talked about continuing the story in film form rather than another television series, so the end of the show on BBC One is less a full stop than a change of format. The television run felt complete, and that seems to have been the intention from fairly early on.
