What is Boardwalk Empire about?

Boardwalk Empire arrives with the full weight of HBO prestige behind it: Martin Scorsese directed the pilot, Terence Winter came straight from The Sopranos, and the Atlantic City boardwalk was reconstructed at enormous expense on a Brooklyn soundstage. All of that effort is visible on screen. The show looks extraordinary, and for viewers who want to sink into a world, to feel the texture of 1920s America with its jazz clubs, corrupt ward bosses, and newly illegal whiskey, there is almost nothing better.

Steve Buscemi is an unusual choice for a crime patriarch, and the show never quite lets you forget it. Nucky Thompson is not Tony Soprano. He is colder, more calculating, more comfortable in a suit than in a fight, and Buscemi plays him with a kind of watchful stillness that works well in quiet scenes and occasionally feels insufficient when the role demands something more volcanic. The supporting cast compensates considerably. Michael Shannon's prohibition agent Nelson Van Alden is one of television's great repressed disasters of a human being, and Stephen Graham's Al Capone grows from a supporting player into something genuinely frightening.

Critics loved the show from the start, drawn to its ambition and its refusal to romanticize its criminals the way lesser gangster fiction does. Audiences were enthusiastic early on and remained loyal, though many felt the middle seasons lost momentum as the show accumulated storylines faster than it could resolve them. The final season, compressed into eight episodes and jumping years forward in time, divided viewers sharply.

Where Boardwalk Empire sits is in an interesting place historically: it aired in the years when peak television was at its most confident, and it has the virtues and vices of that confidence. It trusts its audience to keep track of a large cast across a complicated period of history, and it rewards patience. What it never quite achieves is the emotional devastation of the shows it most resembles. You watch it with consistent admiration and occasional impatience, which is a strange but not unfamiliar feeling when a show is technically excellent and yet keeps you slightly at arm's length from caring too much about anyone in it.

The narrative had always been building toward the collapse of Nucky Thompson's empire against the backdrop of Prohibition's end, and once that historical endpoint arrived, there was nowhere natural left to go.

Ratings had been softening throughout the later seasons. The show never quite matched the cultural footprint of HBO's other prestige dramas despite its enormous production budgets and a genuine critical following. By season four and five, the audience was smaller than it had been at the peak, and while HBO tolerated that kind of decline for shows with awards cachet, it almost certainly made the decision to wrap things up rather than renew easier for everyone involved.

There's also just the shape of the story itself. The jump forward in time during season five, revisiting Nucky's origins alongside the present-day storyline, had the feel of a show tying up loose ends with intention. This wasn't a cancellation dressed up as a finale. The creative team got to finish what they started, which for a dense, novelistic crime drama rooted in a specific historical period, was probably the right call.
