Curb Your Enthusiasm ran for 24 years, which is an almost absurd achievement for a comedy that was never designed to be a machine. Larry David always operated on his own schedule, taking multi-year breaks between seasons whenever he felt like it, and the show survived those gaps because the premise was essentially timeless: Larry being Larry, in whatever social situation you put him in. By season 12, though, David had made clear that he felt the show had reached a natural stopping point, and the finale was designed as a genuine conclusion rather than a door left open.

The ending was David's choice, not the network's. HBO had no obvious reason to cancel a show with an 8.8 on IMDb that remained a prestige comedy staple, and the network almost certainly would have aired more seasons if he'd wanted to make them. But David has always been more interested in quality control than in keeping a franchise alive, and after 120 episodes spread across nearly a quarter century, he apparently felt he'd said what he wanted to say with the character.
