What is The White Lotus about?

Mike White's anthology series checks wealthy tourists into a different luxury resort each season and watches them slowly crack open. The premise sounds simple, almost like a bottle episode stretched across several weeks, but the show has a way of turning poolside small talk into something that lingers uncomfortably. Each season opens with the suggestion of a body and spends its runtime making you wonder whose it is, though the mystery is almost beside the point. What White is really doing is a kind of class dissection, cutting into the gap between how rich people present themselves and what they actually want, fear, or are willing to do.

The tone is its own strange thing. The White Lotus is funny, sometimes very funny, but the laughs tend to curdle. The first season, set in Hawaii with Jennifer Coolidge giving one of the more indelible comic-tragic performances in recent memory, established this unease immediately. The second season moved to Sicily and got considerably hornier and more operatic. Season three, set in Thailand, brought a new ensemble including Parker Posey, Walton Goggins, and Carrie Coon, leaning harder into spirituality and American restlessness. Not every season lands its final notes with equal force, and White occasionally oversells his satirical points, but the show rarely mistakes cruelty for depth.

Critics responded to the first season with something close to relief, recognizing a show that could be sharp about privilege without being preachy about it, or at least not too preachy. Awards followed in quantity. Audiences came along enthusiastically, and by the third season the show had graduated from prestige curiosity to full cultural event, the kind of series people process episode by episode on social media.

The comparison that gets made most often is to Succession, another HBO property about terrible rich people, and the kinship is real but limited. The White Lotus moves more slowly, cares more about its lower-status characters, and is genuinely more interested in the places it sets itself than Succession ever was in its boardrooms. Natasha Rothwell returning in season three as Belinda, the spa manager first seen in Hawaii, is one of those small continuity details that rewards loyal viewers and hints that White thinks of the whole project as something more accumulative than a simple reset each year.
