Olivia Cooke's Alicent and Emma D'Arcy's Rhaenyra anchor the series, and their relationship, a friendship corroded over decades by obligation and resentment, is the emotional core that makes the political maneuvering feel personal. Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen is pure chaos energy in a silver wig, often the most watchable figure on screen, occasionally just a scene-stealer the writers don't quite know what to do with.
Critics responded warmly, and audiences largely agreed, pushing the show to some of HBO's biggest debut numbers. The first season was widely praised.
