The production design is lush and the supporting cast, particularly Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne and a quietly scene-stealing Boyd Holbrook as The Corinthian, give the show texture that Sturridge's remote Morpheus sometimes cannot provide on his own.

Comic readers and critics largely embraced it as a faithful and thoughtful translation, and audience scores have been warm if not rapturous. The IMDb rating sits at a respectable 7.6, which feels about right. It is not a flawless show. Some adaptational choices stretch thin, and the episodic structure means quality varies considerably across a season. But when it works, it works in a way that serialized fantasy television rarely manages.

What separates The Sandman from the crowded field of prestige fantasy is that it is genuinely interested in grief and storytelling as subjects, not just as window dressing for plot mechanics. The second season, arriving in 2025, had the unenviable task of deepening a mythology that the first season introduced with such care.
