What is The Sandman about?

Tom Sturridge plays Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams, as a figure of immense gravity and very little warmth, which is exactly right. He is a god who has been trapped in a glass sphere for a century, and when he finally escapes, he does not feel relief so much as cold purpose. That quality, austere and strange, sets the tone for the whole show. This is fantasy television that takes its own mythology seriously, sometimes to a fault, but more often to genuinely striking effect.

What makes The Sandman worth watching is its commitment to the source material, Neil Gaiman's celebrated DC/Vertigo comic run, which means the show is genuinely weird in ways that streaming fantasy rarely is. Episodes detour into standalone stories, one of them essentially a bottle episode set in a diner at the end of time, another a grief-soaked character study. The show is not interested in the tournament-bracket plotting that defines so much prestige fantasy. It is more interested in the texture of dreams, loss, and responsibility, and it earns that ambition more often than not.

Critics mostly responded well, praising the visual imagination and the performances, with Kirby Howell-Baptiste's Death standing out as warmly as Sturridge's Morpheus is remote. Audience reception on IMDb sits at a solid 7.6 across a large sample, which suggests genuine appreciation rather than niche cult affection. Fans of the comics were, by and large, pleased to see the adaptation treated with care rather than reduced to an action vehicle.

Season two arrived in 2025 and completed the series, which means viewers now have the rare luxury of watching the whole thing knowing it ends. For a story so preoccupied with the consequences of never changing, there is a particular irony in Morpheus finally being allowed to reach his conclusion.

The Sandman wrapped up after two seasons, and the situation here is a bit unusual. Netflix renewed the show for a second season after the first performed well enough on the platform, but the series was always going to be a difficult long-term proposition. Adapting Neil Gaiman's sprawling, deeply literary comic book series is an enormous undertaking, and the production costs for a show this visually ambitious are substantial. Netflix has repeatedly shown that even modestly successful fantasy and sci-fi dramas get cut if the numbers don't justify the expense, and a 7.6 on IMDb suggests a devoted but not massive audience.

There's also the matter of Neil Gaiman himself. Gaiman faced serious personal misconduct allegations that became public during the show's run, and while Netflix didn't immediately pull the plug, that kind of controversy around a creator whose name and vision are inseparable from the source material creates real complications for a show's future. It's hard to imagine the platform eagerly commissioning more seasons under those circumstances, regardless of how the second season performed.

Whether the second season was shaped into something resembling a conclusion or simply stops where production ended is worth noting. The show didn't run out of story, Gaiman's comics have years of material remaining, but the combination of cost, audience size, and the shadow cast by the allegations around its creator made continuing essentially untenable. Two seasons is what this one gets.
