What is Angel about?

Angel started life as the brooding older sibling to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, spinning its souled vampire off to Los Angeles to fight demons and wrestle with guilt. The premise sounds grim, and sometimes it is, but the show is also frequently funny, occasionally absurd, and willing to burn its own mythology to the ground when the story demands it. If you watched Buffy and wanted more of the mythology without the high school allegory, this is an obvious next step. If you never watched Buffy, you can still find your footing, though the early seasons reward familiarity.

What separates Angel from most supernatural procedurals of its era is how dramatically it changes shape across five seasons. The first season is episodic noir, cases of the week, a vampire detective agency in a city of fallen dreams. By season three it has become something stranger and more serialized, interested in questions about free will and whether redemption is even achievable. Season five, set inside a demonic law firm, is arguably the best television the show ever produced, and it arrives just as the series was cancelled. That timing still stings fans who watched it in 2004.

The critical reception was respectful rather than rapturous. Reviewers tended to treat it as a solid companion piece rather than a standalone achievement, which probably undersold it. Audiences were genuinely devoted, and the IMDb score of 7.9 across over 80,000 votes reflects a show people return to and argue about, not one they merely remember fondly. Wesley Wyndam-Pryce, played by Alexis Denisof, is one of the more quietly remarkable character evolutions in genre television, going from comic relief to someone the show trusts with its darkest material.

Amy Acker gets to play two completely different characters in the same body, and she is terrific at both. That arc, centered on Fred and her transformation into the ancient demon Illyria, is the emotional core of the final season and the reason the abrupt ending feels so genuinely painful rather than just inconvenient.

Angel's cancellation in 2004 remains one of the more baffling calls in WB history, largely because the show had just completed what many fans and critics consider its strongest season. Season five brought in James Marsters as Spike, injected new energy into the premise, and the ratings were actually holding reasonably well. Yet the WB pulled the plug anyway, and the timing felt almost deliberately cruel.

The network's decision came down to a cold calculation about its own future direction. The WB was increasingly trying to court a younger, broader audience, and Angel, as a darker and more serialized genre show, didn't fit neatly into where the network wanted to go. Genre television with complex mythology demands a committed audience, and while Angel had one, it was relatively small and not growing. For a network trying to reinvent itself, a loyal niche audience wasn't enough justification to keep an expensive production going.

Creator Joss Whedon was notoriously given very little notice of the cancellation, which left no room to plan a proper finale. The result was a final episode that worked surprisingly well as a closing statement, but only because the writers scrambled to make it so, not because they had time to do it properly. The show ended mid-story in many respects, and a spinoff or continuation never materialized despite years of discussion. It's the kind of cancellation that still irritates people, and reasonably so.
