What is Angel about?

Angel started life with a deceptively simple pitch: take the brooding vampire from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, move him to Los Angeles, and let him run a detective agency for the lost and damned. That setup sounds like it could have produced a gloomy procedural spinning its wheels between parent-show crossovers. Instead, creators Joss Whedon and David Greenwalt built something that eventually outgrew its origins and became, particularly in its later seasons, a darker and more morally complicated show than Buffy ever was.

The tone shifts are the most interesting thing about Angel over its five seasons. Early episodes lean into noir atmosphere, with the city itself treated as a kind of purgatory where the desperate wash up. By the middle seasons the show is doing full serialized arcs about law firms as instruments of evil, corruption from within, and the question of whether fighting for good is worth anything when the forces against you are entrenched, well-funded, and utterly indifferent to whether you survive. Those questions stop feeling like genre decoration and start feeling like the actual point. The final season, set inside the demonic law firm Wolfram and Hart, turns the premise inside out in ways that frustrated some viewers and electrified others.

The cast is a large part of why the show works. David Boreanaz carries more than people gave him credit for at the time, but the real engine of the later seasons is Alexis Denisof's Wesley, who goes through a character transformation so thorough it's almost jarring to watch early and late episodes back to back. Amy Acker does extraordinary work when the show asks her to, particularly after her character's transformation in season four. Critics were warmer to Angel as it matured, and audience affection has grown considerably in retrospect, though the show never quite escaped being measured against Buffy.

The cancellation, announced while season five was still airing, visibly shaped the finale. The last episode ends not with resolution but with a battle the characters know they probably won't survive, which is either a cheat or the most honest ending the show could have had. That argument is still going.

Angel's cancellation in 2004 remains one of the more baffling calls in WB history, largely because the show had just completed what many fans and critics consider its strongest season. Season five brought in James Marsters as Spike, injected new energy into the premise, and the ratings were actually holding reasonably well. Yet the WB pulled the plug anyway, and the timing felt almost deliberately cruel.

The network's decision came down to a cold calculation about its own future direction. The WB was increasingly trying to court a younger, broader audience, and Angel, as a darker and more serialized genre show, didn't fit neatly into where the network wanted to go. Genre television with complex mythology demands a committed audience, and while Angel had one, it was relatively small and not growing. For a network trying to reinvent itself, a loyal niche audience wasn't enough justification to keep an expensive production going.

Creator Joss Whedon was notoriously given very little notice of the cancellation, which left no room to plan a proper finale. The result was a final episode that worked surprisingly well as a closing statement, but only because the writers scrambled to make it so, not because they had time to do it properly. The show ended mid-story in many respects, and a spinoff or continuation never materialized despite years of discussion. It's the kind of cancellation that still irritates people, and reasonably so.
