Audiences stayed loyal throughout, and the IMDb rating of 7.5 reflects a fanbase that has real affection for what the show was doing even when it stumbled. Critics were more skeptical, particularly in the middle seasons when the mythology grew convoluted and the production budget strained against the ambitions of the stories. The producers, writers, and network aligned on wrapping up Clark's journey and delivering the moment viewers had been waiting a decade for: Clark Kent fully becoming Superman. That kind of planned ending is relatively rare in television, and Smallville earned it through sheer longevity.
