What is Peacemaker about?

James Gunn's Peacemaker takes one of the dumber side characters from The Suicide Squad and does something genuinely surprising with him: it makes him worth spending time with. John Cena plays Christopher Smith, a man who kills for peace and has the emotional intelligence of a golden retriever who has been raised by white supremacists, which is essentially the setup. The show finds real comedy in that gap between his sincere self-belief and the wreckage he leaves behind, but it also, gradually and without making a big announcement about it, asks what it costs to be the kind of person society has shaped him to be.

The tone is the thing here. Gunn writes Peacemaker as broad, vulgar superhero comedy that keeps tripping over genuine feeling when you least expect it. The ensemble helps enormously. Danielle Brooks brings warmth and a kind of grounded sanity to Leota Adebayo, and Freddie Stroma's Vigilante is so committed to casual sociopathy that he becomes weirdly endearing. The show has a running joke, essentially, about male friendship and emotional repression, and it lands more often than it has any right to. The opening credits sequence, in which the cast performs a synchronized dance to Wig Wam's "Do You Wanna Taste It," became one of those rare TV moments people genuinely passed around.

Audiences responded well, with the first season drawing strong viewership for HBO Max and a critical reception that was warmer than anyone might have predicted for a spinoff built around a punchline character. An 8.2 on IMDb from nearly 200,000 votes suggests the show found a real audience rather than just a promotional one.

Season two arrives after a long gap and with Frank Grillo's Rick Flag Sr. added to the mix, which raises the question of whether the show can sustain what made the first season work: the specificity of this particular group of broken, ridiculous people finding something like loyalty with each other. The dance sequence is a hard act to follow, and Gunn has moved on to run DC's film operation, which may explain why the second season took as long as it did to reach screens.

Peacemaker was always a show with a specific gravitational center: James Gunn. He created it, wrote it, directed much of it, and it existed as an extension of his vision for DC on screen. When Gunn moved into his role as co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, the entire DC film and television universe began a structured reorganization. Peacemaker's two seasons fit neatly into that transition, arriving early enough to establish the tone of what Gunn wanted DC to be, and wrapping up before the full weight of his new DC Universe slate demanded his attention elsewhere.

The show didn't get cancelled. It ran two seasons, totaled 16 episodes, and by most measures landed well with audiences, holding an 8.2 on IMDb, which for a superhero spinoff built around a C-list character is genuinely strong. But Gunn has a larger universe to architect now, and John Cena's Christopher Smith has presumably been folded into whatever the broader DCU continuity requires going forward. A traditional third season on Max was likely never part of the plan once the DCU roadmap took shape.

So this is less a story of a show that burned out and more one that served its purpose and concluded on reasonable terms. Gunn got to make exactly the kind of weird, funny, emotionally earnest thing he wanted to make, the audience showed up for it, and the show ended while it was still good. That's rarer than it should be.
