What is Peacemaker about?

John Cena spent years being underestimated as an actor, and Peacemaker is the show that settled that argument. He plays Christopher Smith, a man who wraps real psychological damage in American flag spandex and hair-metal bravado, and Cena finds both the absurdity and the sadness of that without ever tipping the balance too far in either direction. The character debuted in The Suicide Squad, but this series, created by James Gunn, gives him room to breathe in ways a two-hour film never could.

The tone is aggressively crude and also surprisingly warm. Peacemaker makes jokes about genitals and then, sometimes in the same scene, lands an emotional gut-punch about fathers and shame. That whiplash is the point. Gunn has always been drawn to broken people who happen to have superpowers, and here he leans into it harder than usual. Freddie Stroma's Vigilante is a scene-stealer, a man so cheerfully devoid of moral reasoning that he functions almost as a dark mirror of Smith's self-justifications. The ensemble is tight, and Danielle Brooks in particular does a lot with a role that could easily have stayed functional.

Critics responded warmly, and the IMDb score of 8.2 from a large number of voters suggests the audience followed. Some of that enthusiasm came with the novelty of the premise, a prestige-adjacent superhero show that was willing to be deliberately stupid on purpose. Season two arrived three years later, after Gunn moved to lead DC Studios, which gave the whole enterprise a different kind of weight.

What the show does best is take its ridiculous premise seriously on an emotional level while refusing to take it seriously on any other level. The opening credits sequence, in which the entire cast performs an elaborate synchronized dance to a glam-rock song, tells you everything about the show's priorities. It is not trying to be The Boys. It is trying to make you laugh and then feel slightly bad about yourself for caring so much about a man in a chrome helmet.

Peacemaker was always a show with a specific gravitational center: James Gunn. He created it, wrote it, directed much of it, and it existed as an extension of his vision for DC on screen. When Gunn moved into his role as co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, the entire DC film and television universe began a structured reorganization. Peacemaker's two seasons fit neatly into that transition, arriving early enough to establish the tone of what Gunn wanted DC to be, and wrapping up before the full weight of his new DC Universe slate demanded his attention elsewhere.

The show didn't get cancelled. It ran two seasons, totaled 16 episodes, and by most measures landed well with audiences, holding an 8.2 on IMDb, which for a superhero spinoff built around a C-list character is genuinely strong. But Gunn has a larger universe to architect now, and John Cena's Christopher Smith has presumably been folded into whatever the broader DCU continuity requires going forward. A traditional third season on Max was likely never part of the plan once the DCU roadmap took shape.

So this is less a story of a show that burned out and more one that served its purpose and concluded on reasonable terms. Gunn got to make exactly the kind of weird, funny, emotionally earnest thing he wanted to make, the audience showed up for it, and the show ended while it was still good. That's rarer than it should be.
