What is Close Enough about?

Close Enough takes the specific anxiety of your early thirties (bills, kids, a job that doesn't quite fit, friends who still want to party) and warps it into something ridiculous and frequently surreal. J.G. Quintel's cartoon follows Josh and Emily as they navigate married life with a daughter, a perpetually chaotic living situation, and friend group that includes a man whose life seems constructed entirely from bad decisions. The show is genuinely funny because it swings wildly between the mundane (daycare forms, a broken dishwasher) and the completely insane (a villain who steals ham, a subplot involving stripper clowns). That tonal whiplash is the point.

The animation style is loose and expressive, somewhere between crude doodles and actual design, which serves the comedy well. When a scene needs to get weird, it just gets weird. There's no elaborate setup. A character will simply transform into something impossible and the show moves on. That willingness to abandon logic for a joke gives Close Enough a manic energy that sets it apart from other adult animated comedies that tend to build their humor more carefully.

The show found a devoted audience on HBO Max and critics were generally kind to it, though most acknowledged it worked better in short bursts than as something you'd marathon heavily.
