What is Helstrom about?

Helstrom asks you to follow two adult siblings who believe their imprisoned father is a literal demon. Daimon works as an exorcist of sorts, using occult knowledge to hunt supernatural threats. They're trying to understand what their father actually is while operating as a dark mirror to other superhero teams: less about saving the world, more about family dysfunction and inherited trauma. If you liked the aesthetic of Marvel's Netflix shows but want something stranger and less concerned with being the next cultural event, this might scratch that itch.

The show commits to a gothic tone without fully earning the weight it's after. Tom Austen and Sydney Lemmon have decent chemistry as the Helstroms, bickering and protecting each other in turns, but the writing around them is uneven. Some episodes lean into genuinely unsettling horror (there's a particularly effective bottle episode about a possessive entity), while others feel like they're checking boxes for a supernatural procedural. The show's real problem is ambition without focus. It wants to be about demonic possession, about generational sin, about supernatural investigators, about two people trying to escape their upbringing. Those are fine things to explore, just not all at once while also introducing new antagonists every week.

Critics and audiences didn't warm to it, and the show ended after a single season. Cancellation felt less like a shock and more like a natural conclusion to something that hadn't quite found its footing. The 10-episode run was short enough that it never had time to develop real momentum, though a few episodes suggest it might have found something worth watching if given more space to breathe.
