David can reshape reality with his mind, but he cannot tell if he's doing it, if someone else is, or if nothing at all is happening. This uncertainty is the show's actual subject. His diagnosis of schizophrenia and the possibility that his perceptions are symptoms rather than evidence of genuine abilities creates genuine dread.

The show wears its visual experimentalism like armor. Hawley floods scenes with expressionistic color work, disorienting editing, and dream logic that reflects David's unreliable perception. A conversation might suddenly shift into a dance number. A casual moment can fracture into temporal distortion. This makes Legion difficult to follow, though not always in rewarding ways. The approach works best when the style reinforces the mystery at the show's center, and it backfires when it feels like ornamentation. Dan Stevens grounds the chaos with genuine fragility, playing David as someone trying to hold together a self that might not be real.

Audiences and critics initially warmed to Legion's bold experimentation. The first season built real mystery around David's nature and featured compelling performances from Rachel Keller and Aubrey Plaza. But the show's second and third seasons lost focus. The narrative grew more convoluted without becoming more meaningful. Plot developments felt obligatory rather than inevitable. What had seemed like artistic ambition started reading as artistic obstruction.

Legion remains a strange artifact, one of the few attempts to make a superhero story that takes mental illness as something genuinely unsettling rather than something to overcome.
