What is Snowfall about?

Snowfall arrives with a specific thesis built into its premise: this is where the crack epidemic started, told from the ground up. The show tracks the early 1980s Los Angeles drug trade through several converging storylines, most centrally Franklin Saint, a young, entrepreneurial Black man from South Central who gets into distribution just as the product is exploding, and Teddy McDonald, a CIA operative whose off-books dealings with Contra-connected suppliers help flood the streets with cheap cocaine. The show is not subtle about the political argument it's making.

Damson Idris is the reason to watch. He carries Franklin's arc across six seasons with genuine commitment, and watching a smart, ambitious kid become something colder and more dangerous is the show's real engine. The supporting cast around him, especially Amin Joseph and Angela Lewis as his uncle Jerome and aunt Louie, adds texture and warmth that the story needs badly. The show has an almost classical tragedy structure, and by the later seasons it leans into that hard.

The tone is patient, sometimes more patient than audiences expect from a crime drama. Early seasons drew comparisons to The Wire, which the show does not quite live up to, but it's not a bad point of reference. Critics responded warmly from the start, though the show never broke through to mainstream conversation the way its quality deserved. The back half of its run, particularly seasons five and six, generated the most attention, as the consequences for Franklin and his family became genuinely brutal.

John Singleton's involvement in creating the show gives it a real Los Angeles texture that a lot of prestige crime dramas fake or ignore entirely. His death in 2019 was a loss the show absorbed without losing its footing, which says something about how well the foundation was laid. The final season's willingness to deny Franklin any comfortable exit is the most honest thing the show does.

By the time the sixth season aired in early 2023, Franklin Saint's journey from a teenage hustler to a broken, isolated man had run its course. There was nowhere credible left to take him that the story hadn't already mapped out.

Co-creator Dave Andron and the late John Singleton conceived the show with a defined endpoint in mind, and FX gave them the runway to reach it. That kind of creative control is increasingly rare, and it shows in how the final season landed. The series didn't get yanked mid-story or quietly shelved. It closed on its own terms, which is about as good as it gets for a prestige cable drama.

The ratings were never blockbuster numbers, but Snowfall maintained a loyal and engaged audience throughout its run, and FX stuck with it long enough for the show to finish what it started. An IMDb score of 8.5 reflects a fanbase that genuinely cared about the characters and the world the show built. It wasn't cancelled because nobody watched. It ended because the story was told.
