When Does Shōgun Season 2 Come Out? Is It Renewed?

What is Shōgun about?

Hiroyuki Sanada spent decades trying to get this story made correctly, and it shows. The FX adaptation of James Clavell's novel arrives as a ten-episode miniseries that treats feudal Japan not as exotic backdrop but as the actual center of its world. John Blackthorne, the shipwrecked English navigator played by Cosmo Jarvis, is the nominal Western entry point, but the show makes clear fairly quickly that he is less a hero than a piece on someone else's board. That someone is Toranaga, and Sanada's performance is the reason to watch even when everything else would be enough on its own.

The tone is serious without being airless. The show has politics in the vein of a chess match played with human lives, and it commits fully to portraying the codes, rituals, and language of the period. Much of the dialogue is in Japanese with subtitles, a choice that earlier adaptations avoided and that makes an enormous difference here. Anna Sawai as Mariko gives the series its emotional spine, a character navigating loyalty, shame, and survival with more complexity than most shows manage in an entire run. The violence, when it comes, lands with weight, not spectacle.

Critics received it about as enthusiastically as prestige television gets received. The IMDb rating reflects an audience that engaged rather than just sampled, and much of the praise centered on exactly what made the production risky: the language choice, the refusal to flatten Japanese culture for outside consumption, the patience of the storytelling. Some viewers found the early episodes slow, and that is a fair note. The show earns its pace, but it does ask you to trust it before it pays off.

The 1980 NBC miniseries starring Richard Chamberlain now looks like a rough sketch. This version treats the same source material as an opportunity to do something the original could not have attempted, telling a story about power in 1600 Japan from the inside, not from Blackthorne's bewildered exterior. Toranaga's final episode, and what Sanada does with almost no dialogue in the closing minutes, is the kind of thing that sticks with you after the credits roll.
