What is Damages about?

Glenn Close has never been more frightening on screen than she is as Patty Hewes, a Manhattan litigator who treats human beings as instruments and calls it mentorship. That performance alone is reason enough to watch Damages, but the show around her is equally serious, built on a structure of fractured timelines that keep the viewer perpetually off-balance. Each season opens with a scene from the end of the story, then works backward and forward simultaneously, making you question what you understand about every scene you've just watched.

The tone is cold and paranoid in a way that network television rarely permits. Damages trusts its audience to sit with ambiguity, and it refuses to offer a character who is simply good. Rose Byrne's Ellen starts out as the audience's surrogate, the young idealist who wants to believe Patty is worth admiring, and the show's deepest tension comes from watching that belief erode slowly enough that you mourn it.
