What is The Strain about?

Guillermo del Toro's vampire mythology gets a slow-burn procedural treatment here, starting with an unnerving premise: a plane lands at JFK with almost everyone aboard dead, and the CDC investigates what looks like a disease outbreak. For its first season, The Strain earns real dread by keeping its monsters at the edge of frame and letting the horror feel like a pandemic thriller. That restraint eventually evaporates, but for a while it works.

The show's most distinctive quality is its commitment to old-world grotesque. Del Toro and Carlton Cuse draw on Eastern European vampire folklore, not the sleek, romantic tradition Hollywood usually prefers, and the results are genuinely unsettling. Tentacle-tongued creatures, silver-laced weapons, an ancient strigoi mythology delivered in flashback by David Bradley's Abraham Setrakian, who is easily the show's best asset. Bradley plays the Holocaust survivor turned vampire hunter with a worn gravity that the rest of the cast rarely matches. Corey Stoll's Eph, by contrast, is a frustrating lead, less a fully realized character than a vehicle for plot mechanics, and the ongoing subplot involving his son Zach tests a viewer's patience across all four seasons in ways the writers clearly did not intend.

Critics responded warmly to the first season, appreciating its creature-feature ambition on a prestige cable budget. Audience enthusiasm was solid but unspectacular, and both groups noticed the show losing altitude as it went. By seasons three and four, the apocalyptic scale had outgrown the character work holding it together, and the narrative started to feel like obligation.

What The Strain does best, it does in pockets rather than across whole seasons. A basement confrontation, a flashback to Nazi-era Europe, a sequence where the infection spreads through a subway car. Those moments justify the whole enterprise more than any of the mythology-dump dialogue that surrounds them.

The Strain was always conceived as a finite story. The series was based on a trilogy of novels by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, and the showrunners were working toward a predetermined ending from the beginning. Four seasons and 46 episodes was roughly the shape of the story they wanted to tell, so when season four wrapped up the narrative in 2017, it was a conclusion rather than a cutoff.

That said, the ratings had declined noticeably over the course of the run. The show premiered to strong numbers for FX in 2014, riding genuine curiosity about del Toro's vampire mythology and a pulpy, gore-heavy aesthetic that felt distinct from what else was on cable at the time. But audience engagement eroded across subsequent seasons, and by the time the final season aired, it was drawing a fraction of its original viewership. A more popular show might have found reasons to extend its story beyond the source material, but FX and the creative team had little incentive to push past the natural endpoint when the audience had already thinned out.

The result was a show that ended on its own terms, more or less, even if those terms were shaped partly by diminishing returns. It got to finish. Not every genre show on cable in that era could say the same, and the fact that del Toro's involvement gave it a clear creative destination probably saved it from a messier fate.
