The tone is broadly serious and apocalyptic, though the pacing can feel sluggish in stretches where character building matters more than plot momentum.

Critics and audiences were lukewarm, with the show landing at a 5.7 on IMDb. The production values are solid and it's never actively offensive, but reviewers noted that it doesn't justify itself as a new interpretation. The miniseries format that worked so well three decades ago doesn't translate cleanly to prestige television's nine-episode season structure. The show often feels like it's padding the material instead of deepening it. Some found the non-linear storytelling initially confusing without enough payoff to warrant the confusion.

The timing did the show no favors. The production itself faced obstacles, too. Ben Affleck's departure from the cast midway through filming left a significant gap in the ensemble, and there were reports of creative turbulence behind the scenes.
