What is The Walking Dead about?

Rick Grimes waking up alone in an abandoned hospital, shuffling into a hallway full of rot and silence, remains one of the more genuinely unnerving opening sequences television produced in the 2010s. The Walking Dead was never really about zombies, and it knew that from the start. The undead are set dressing. The actual subject is what people do to each other when the rules collapse, and at its best the show pursued that question with real nastiness and occasional tenderness.

The tone shifted constantly across eleven seasons, sometimes productively and sometimes not. Frank Darabont's early episodes had a cinematic weight and a willingness to sit with grief. Later seasons could feel like a different show entirely, cycling through charismatic villains (Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Negan arrived with genuine menace before the writers softened him into something almost cuddly) and repeating a structural loop of finding safety, losing safety, mourning, repeat. Melissa McBride's Carol is the character who grew most interestingly over the run, moving from abuse survivor to the show's most ruthlessly effective person. Norman Reedus's Daryl became the fan favorite in a way that eventually distorted the storytelling around him.

Critics were enthusiastic early and grew more ambivalent as the seasons piled up. Audiences followed a similar arc but at massive scale. The show was a genuine cultural phenomenon around seasons three and four, drawing over seventeen million viewers for certain episodes, numbers almost nothing on cable television has matched. It fell from those heights but retained a loyal audience through to the end, which says something about the genuine attachment viewers formed with particular characters even when the plotting frustrated them.

Among zombie properties it set a standard that almost everything after it has had to reckon with, though it arguably damaged the genre by training audiences to accept long stretches of wheel-spinning drama as the price of admission. The final seasons tried to course-correct and partially succeeded. What the show will be remembered for, more than any specific storyline, is that image of civilization reassembled from scraps, and how much ugliness that process kept requiring.

Eleven seasons and 177 episodes is a long run for any show, and The Walking Dead's conclusion in 2022 was, by most measures, a planned exit rather than a sudden pull of the plug. AMC announced the final season in advance, structured it across multiple extended parts, and used it to wrap up the core story that had been running since 2010. This was a show saying goodbye on its own terms, more or less.

The ratings story is worth understanding though, because it shaped how that goodbye looked. At its peak around seasons 4 and 5, The Walking Dead was a genuine phenomenon, routinely drawing 15 to 17 million viewers and dominating the cable landscape in a way few dramas ever have. By the later seasons, those numbers had eroded significantly. The deaths of major characters, particularly Glenn and Abraham in the season 7 premiere, caused a visible audience drop that the show never fully recovered from. Viewers who had invested years in those characters felt burned, and many simply moved on. The show remained a solid performer by cable standards, but the cultural conversation around it had cooled considerably.

AMC's decision to end the series and shift energy toward spinoffs, including Fear the Walking Dead, The Ones Who Live, and Dead City, reflects where the economics of prestige television have moved. A sprawling, expensive flagship with a declining audience can actually become a liability when the same intellectual property can be repackaged into smaller, cheaper stories targeting the fans who remain loyal. The Walking Dead universe continues; the original show just became too unwieldy to sustain indefinitely, and wrapping it at eleven seasons gave AMC a clean foundation to build from.
