What is Interview with the Vampire about?

AMC's Interview with the Vampire takes Anne Rice's novel and splits the difference between prestige drama and operatic gothic melodrama, with uneven but often striking results. Jacob Anderson plays Louis, a Black vampire from 1910s New Orleans recounting his centuries to a dying journalist, and the show frames everything through his perspective, his bitterness, his version of events. What this means in practice is that nothing you see can be entirely trusted. The narrative keeps folding back on itself, contradicting earlier scenes, revealing that Louis has been lying or misremembering or selectively omitting the parts that make him look worse. It's a structure that could be annoying but mostly works because the show commits to it fully and because Anderson gives Louis a weariness and self-loathing that makes his unreliability feel like character rather than gimmick.

The tone is deliberately overwrought. Sam Reid as Lestat plays the role as theatrical seduction and cruelty wrapped in velvet and perfume, all volatility and appetite. Assad Zaman's Armand arrives later as another source of obsession for Louis, beautiful and dangerous in a completely different register. The show wallows in blood and music and desire and jealousy, in the particular rot of immortality, which is to say it understands that a vampire story without some fundamental melodrama is just a show about old people. The first season especially has real visual style, all jewel tones and shadows and period New Orleans decay.

Critical response was largely positive, though viewers seemed more divided. The second season lost some of the first season's momentum and felt slighter, caught between telling Louis's story and setting up a larger Anne Rice universe. Some found the narrative complexity clever; others found it repetitive. The show also spends considerable time with Claudia (Delainey Hayles), Louis's vampire daughter, whose suffering is central to the whole thing and whose arc is treated with a weight that most shows would shy away from.

What ultimately matters is that Interview with the Vampire succeeds at something that's actually quite difficult: it makes you watch beautiful, terrible people hurt each other across centuries and keeps you invested in why they keep coming back to one another. Whether that's enough probably depends on how much you can tolerate watching characters make the same destructive choices over and over, though at least here the show is aware that's what's happening.
