Critics were enthusiastic throughout, and the audience that followed it from Breaking Bad largely converted into devoted fans. The show earned Emmy nominations in bulk but famously won none of the major ones, which became its own running cultural grievance. The final season, which split across 2021 and 2022, satisfied most of the people who had invested in it, though the black-and-white flash-forward storyline that bookended the series divided opinion on whether it fully paid off what came before.

Among crime dramas, Better Call Saul is unusual in being less interested in crime than in the psychology of self-deception. Six seasons was the shape the story needed, and the creative team treated it that way from the beginning.

The numbers supported seeing it through. Better Call Saul built a devoted audience and earned serious critical respect, scoring an IMDb rating of 9/10, which put it in rare company. AMC had every financial incentive to keep it going if the creators had wanted to, but Gilligan and Gould were not interested in stretching the material past its natural end. That kind of discipline is unusual in television, where a successful show is almost always pushed to continue beyond its best years.

The final season aired in 2022, split across two parts, and the show concluded on its own terms. No cancellation, no abrupt ending forced by outside circumstances. It is one of the cleaner examples in recent television of a prestige drama that knew what it was, told its story, and stopped.
