The show's real engine is Smurf, played by Ellen Barkin in the early seasons with a kind of predatory warmth that makes every scene feel slightly dangerous. She controls her adult sons through money, affection, and the threat of withdrawal of both, and watching that dynamic play out is more unsettling than most of the actual heists. The crime plots are competently staged but rarely the point. What the show keeps returning to is how a family system built on manipulation reproduces itself, and how J, the newcomer, has to decide whether to resist that or simply get better at it than anyone else.

Audiences responded steadily over six seasons, and the IMDb score of 8.2 reflects a fanbase that stayed loyal rather than a show that ever broke through to broader cultural conversation. Critics appreciated the performances more than the plotting, which is a fair reading. The heist mechanics sometimes creak, and the middle seasons drift. But the show kept earning its keep through character work, particularly from Shawn Hatosy as Pope, whose damaged intensity never tips into caricature despite the writing occasionally inviting it to.

TNT ran it for 75 episodes across six years, and the later seasons introduced flashback storylines showing Smurf's own origins that were smarter than they had any right to be. The show ends as it more or less began: a family eating itself from the inside, everyone convinced they have the most to lose.

TNT renewed the show for a sixth and final season, giving the creators the runway to wrap up the Cody family saga on their own terms rather than leaving things unresolved. That kind of deliberate conclusion is relatively rare in cable television, and it reflects the fact that the show had built enough goodwill with the network to be allowed a proper sendoff.
