What is Perception about?

Eric McCormack plays Dr. Daniel Pierce, a neuroscience professor at a Chicago university who consults for the FBI on difficult cases. The hook that separates this from the standard procedural is that Pierce has schizophrenia, which means he sometimes processes cases through conversations with hallucinated figures, including a recurring presence played by Kelly Rowan. The condition is portrayed as both a liability and a kind of perverse asset, giving Pierce access to associative leaps that more grounded minds miss.

TNT positioned this squarely in the eccentric-genius-helps-law-enforcement lane that USA Network had been mining for years with shows like Monk and Psych. Perception is darker than either of those, and it treats the mental illness with more clinical seriousness than most network television bothers with, though it still softens everything enough to fit comfortably into a Tuesday night slot. McCormack is a likeable, committed presence, and his chemistry with Rachael Leigh Cook as FBI agent Kate Moretti carries the show through weaker episodes.
