The Pretender follows Jarod, a man with an almost supernatural ability to master any skill and impersonate any profession, as he escapes the secret research facility where he spent his childhood. What could have been a thin premise for a spy thriller becomes something stranger and more interesting: each week Jarod becomes a firefighter, a doctor, a lawyer, or a nun, helping ordinary people solve their crises while staying one step ahead of Miss Parker, the woman dispatched to drag him back to the Center. The show treats his gift seriously. He doesn't play dress-up; he thinks like a neurosurgeon thinks, solves like a detective solves, operates like a pilot operates. It's a framework that lets the show be multiple genres at once.
